The Resume: I hold a B.S. in Literary Empowerment for Children and a Master of Social Work degree. I am the editor of Ten Generations of Bondage: Eleven Generations of Faith. I have authored three books, Mommy's Reflections: Losings Zumante and Finding the Mustard Seed, Higher Than the Heavens and Deeper Than the Grave, and Remembering Mimi. In the real world, I work full-time as a Grief Counselor.
The Reality: Death is a fact of life. It seems reasonable that grief would be recognized as part of our humanity, but, often, that is not the case. Instead, social pressures can result in grief being hidden, invalidated, or mismanaged. It is healthier for grief to be seen and supported.
The Reason for my Reflections: In August 1999, I gave birth to my son Zumante. Less than a decade later, in July 2009, he died. I was devastated. I was also determined to figure out how to best support my other children, who were deeply grieving their brother. I quickly discoved that there was not much to support grieving children, and especially grieving children of color. So, I decided to create what I couldn't locate.
